Distill is a Chrome extension you install on your own machine. These terms set out the basic agreement between you and the Distill developers when you install, use, or interact with the extension or the marketing site. We've kept them as short and plain as we can.
Use Distill however you like, within the law and within the terms of the hosted backend it relies on. The service is free with daily caps; there is no account and no paid tier — support is an optional Ko-fi contribution. The software is provided as-is, with no warranty. We're not responsible for what the model says or for what you do with the output. If you can't agree to that, don't install the extension.
01Acceptance
By installing the Distill Chrome extension or using the site at distill.productivities.fyi,
you agree to these Terms of Service and to the Privacy Policy. If you are
using Distill on behalf of an organization, you represent that you have authority to bind that
organization to these terms.
02The Distill software
Distill is distributed as a Chrome extension you install from the Chrome Web Store. These Terms of Service govern your use of the official builds we publish. The extension is provided as-is, and we may update, change, or discontinue it at any time.
Updates
The Chrome Web Store may push extension updates automatically. We may modify, add, or remove features between versions. Major changes that affect data handling will be reflected in the Privacy Policy and surfaced in-app.
03The hosted service, usage, and support
Distill is hosted-only: the extension extracts your saved articles locally and sends that text to the Distill backend, which generates the synthesis. There is no bring-your-own-key mode and no API key for you to supply.
Free, with daily caps
The service is free. To keep it sustainable, generation is subject to a daily cap; when you reach it, the extension pauses generation until the cap resets. There is no account and no sign-in. An optional anonymous session may be used to raise the cap; it is not tied to any personal identifier.
Support (Ko-fi)
There is no paid tier and no subscription. If you'd like to support the project, you can make a voluntary contribution via Ko-fi. Contributions are handled entirely by Ko-fi under its own terms, are voluntary, do not purchase any feature or guaranteed level of service, and are non-refundable except as Ko-fi's terms or applicable law require.
04Acceptable use
You agree not to use Distill, or the marketing site, to:
- Violate any applicable law, regulation, or third-party right, including intellectual property and privacy rights, when feeding content to the extension.
- Generate, distribute, or store content that is unlawful, deceptive, harassing, defamatory, or that infringes on others' rights.
- Circumvent paywalls, access controls, or licensing terms of the sites whose articles you save. You remain responsible for whether you are entitled to the content you ask Distill to read.
- Attempt to disrupt, reverse-engineer for purposes other than those permitted by the MIT License, or interfere with the operation of the extension, the marketing site, or the hosted backend — including by exceeding or evading the daily caps through automated means.
- Resell or repackage Distill as a paid service without complying with the MIT License and removing any branding that would imply endorsement.
05Model output
The syntheses Distill produces are generated by a third-party language model in real time. They may be inaccurate, incomplete, biased, or out of date. Treat them as drafts to be checked against the original articles, not as authoritative statements of fact. Distill does not author the model output, does not pre-screen it, and cannot be held responsible for what the model says on a given day.
You retain whatever rights the source content and the model provider's terms grant you over the generated output. We claim no ownership of anything the model produces in response to your requests.
06Third-party services
Using Distill involves several third-party services, each with its own terms:
- Supabase hosts the Distill backend (Edge Functions and database).
- DeepSeek is the language-model provider that generates the output you see; the specific provider may change over time and is disclosed in the extension and Privacy Policy.
- Cloudflare hosts the marketing site.
- Ko-fi processes any voluntary support contribution; that relationship is between you and Ko-fi.
We are not responsible for the availability, content, or behavior of any of these services, and your use of them is governed by their respective agreements.
07Intellectual property
The Distill name, wordmark, and visual identity belong to the Distill contributors. The source code is MIT-licensed. The marketing site's copy, layout, and images are © 2026 Distill contributors and provided for personal reference under CC BY-NC 4.0 unless otherwise noted. Nothing in these terms grants you a trademark license; if you fork the source and ship a derivative product, please pick your own name.
08Disclaimer of warranties
09Limitation of liability
10Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless the Distill contributors from any claim, demand, loss, or expense (including reasonable attorney's fees) arising out of your use of Distill in violation of these terms, any applicable law, or any third party's rights.
11Termination
You may stop using Distill at any time by uninstalling the extension or removing its saved data through your browser's controls. We may discontinue the extension, the marketing site, the hosted backend, or any feature at any time, with or without notice. Provisions that should reasonably survive termination — license, intellectual property, disclaimers, limitations of liability, indemnification — will do so.
12Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the jurisdiction in which the Distill contributors reside, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. Disputes that cannot be resolved informally will be brought in the competent courts of that jurisdiction, except where mandatory consumer-protection law in your country of residence provides otherwise.
13Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time. When we do, we'll change the "Effective" date at the top of this page and, for material changes, surface a notice in the extension before they take effect. Continued use of Distill after the new effective date constitutes acceptance of the revised terms.
